Research Rationale

I will be producing a music magazine of any genre with the target audience of 14-18 year old. I will be constructing different type of research, and ask 14-19 years old. I have access to this, as I go to a girl school which also has a college, meaning that there's 18 years old that enjoy music. There will be two different type of research that I will be doing; one will be Quantitative, where the information can be measured such as surveys etc. The other will be qualitative where the data that I gathered cannot be measured, such as focus groups and interviews. Doing both of these research would be a good way for me to start.

The first type of research I would do is deconstructing a music magazine this is because I can understand what the house style is and what they have on their front cover and double page spread.  While deconstructing I can think about the type of questions that can be asked for my interviewers, this would then lead me to have a focus group session with some student with different age range, as we can have different opinions and say. Focus groups would be a good type of research to do as this is because I can listen to them and will take their opinions into considerations. After I would then look into the music genre that my target audience like and deconstruct that magazine, as I would know the house style and what that they would want me to produce. Once I got all the information I need, I would put it into a data and see what my target audience want from me. From there I would then start to plan my magazine, to meet my target audience needs. In order to to fulfil my audience needs I would just in case do a questionnaire to get more information about what they like and dont like, this will tell me more about them. Hopefully with all the data and analysis I will get a rough idea on what my audience want me to produce.

Music magazine moodboard

Moodboard
Music magazine aren’t the same, they’re all different depending on the music genre and the music magazine house style. For example, billboard front cover magazine is very plain, they have less cover lines on their magazine, this is because the main image has a lot going on so adding cover lines would make it too congested. However other magazine such as ‘uncut’ the editors added a lot of cover lines on the front, to show what’s going to be in the magazine. I personally like the magazine ‘rolling stones’ this is because the image is simple yet very attracting, the editors added an anchor to show the reader who the artist is, they have also added a bit of cover lines explaining who the artist is. The masthead is behind the main image to show that the artist 'camila cabello' is more important then the music magazine.

Typography

Music Magazines have a range of different type of typography; however they all share the same colour scheme: red. The masthead tends to be bold in order to attract the reader and majority of the time is san serif. For example music magazine ‘NME’ is red as it connotes danger, heat and aggression, this shows that the artists passion for music is very bold and have anger in their music. However the outline is black as it shows that the artist’s music is still serious. NME is also case sensitive, which means that the magazine is very direct to their audience.  Some mastheads have a coloured background which relates to their music genre e.g. rebellious, rap etc. However ‘smashhit’ doesn't have a coloured background because they have outlined the masthead in black and in sanserif. The fonts remind me of actions movies and that they are very quick to approach the readers. They all have similarities however ‘top of the pops’ stands out as it doesn't follow the music house style, their main colour scheme is yellow and pink, they go against it. This is because their target audience is teenagers girls, this stands out because their font style is very groovy and reminds me of 80’s. Overall we can say those music magazine mastheads are usually red, bold and serif.

Introduction to NEA

I feel overwhelmed with this brief, we have been asked to design a music magazine with a double page spread for 14-19-year-old that enjoy pop, R&B or indie. I am hoping to achieve this by Christmas time, and have everything ready such as everything on my blog that need to be added, and my final product to be ready and sent to the examiners. I am looking forward to be working with the models and be doing their hair, makeup and closet. Since my models will be my friends, it will be great fun working with them. However, I am not looking forward to be actually producing the magazine, this is because I’m quite scared that something will go wrong and mess up my whole magazine, hopefully everything goes as plan. By producing this final product, I am hoping to improve on my timing limit, this is because last year I didn't have enough time to produce a double page spread, and that was our task that we had to do, we only produced the front page which wasn't enough.  Hopefully this year I will be more organized and have planned everything out, and be ready to put on my blog. Planning everything out will cause way less stress as I know what I want, when. Also this year I am hoping to improve on my Photoshop skill, improving on the little things such as colour of the background, making sure i crop perfectly, so then my music magazine looks professional and looks like it would be in a store.
